Please provide a concise description of the problem that would be addressed by this feature.
Timing is a key part of cooking. (And I'm bad at this - so my family often have to eat late). Preparation times are often a rough estimate or from experienced chiefs.
Please provide a concise description of the feature that would resolve your issue.
So it would be good if users can push a button when starting preparation, recording a timestamp. Every time a step is finished an additional timestamp is recorded. The delta can be recorded as time needed for this step. No running timer necessary!
At the end the recipe (last step closed) these figures could be saved to the database (or the user can decide to discard). Perhaps he had a bad day). Would be good to record the timings for many preparations so you can see a minimum, average and maximum time necessary.
This data are important for other (future) features: Preparing side dishes: I think it would be great if side dishes, planned for this meal, are shown in a parallel column during cooking view. If they both have recorded (or manual entered) times these columns could be timed to the same finish line. Or a calendar integration could launch a first alarm when to start preparation
Please consider and list out some caveats or tradeoffs made in your design decision
Currently steps (same as items checked in a shopping list) are closed immediately. Perhaps only gray it out for a few seconds to enable the user to "undo" like iOS reminders do. Or ask the user to proceed to the next step when in recording mode.
Can't think of any more. As long as the user ticks of every step the timestamps should do the trick. No running timers (which can fail) necessary. If a user messed up he can simply cancel. Without starting the timer nothing changes to the current behavior.
