Sorry to leave this as an issue but I need some certainty about the future of this package before using it in production apps.

There are dozens of open issues. Is cluster still being maintained? If not, are there similar packages that are being maintained you can point me to?

All the resources are focused on building the kadirahq brand now. At least for the port of mupx but cluster is still relevant and supported. Anyway tune into kadirahq if you were not aware of that.
They are very busy so not able to monitor all the great open free contributions that have been provided over the years. Again cluster is super important for the moment last I checked but that might change.
Lots of changes going on, meteor 1.3 will bring changes like nodes tls ssl support etc.
Also checkout apollostack/Apollo by meteor and so on.
