Enter numeric sequences in multi-cursor selections?

Use case: select multiple lines & number them with consequent numbers to make a numbered list in Markdown.

If this feature is not present, how do I approach making a Lua plugin for that?

You could write a plugin but I would rather use the built-in textfilter command to pipe the selection through an external tool of your choice, for example:

nl:

textfilter nl -w1 -s'. '

awk:

textfilter awk '{print(NR". "$0)}'

ruby:

textfilter ruby -npe '$_="#$.. #$_"'

I am looking for a way of binding that to a hotkey. Can a textfilter command be bound to a key?

textfilter piping works only for multiline single cursor selection. This is still a good option, but something that will work with multi-cursor would be nice to have as well.
