'...limited support for Python2' notification not showing

Python extension: v2021.8.1159798656

• open a Dev container with Python: From the remote menu run Try a Development Container Sample and pick Python
• follow the instructions of Test 2.7 notification #17038
• "python.experiments.optInto": ["All"], in your user settings. If not, add it and reload VS Code.
• Make sure python.defaultInterpreterPath entry in your user and workspace settings are at their default value python
• Create a folder folder27with a python file
• In folder27 invoke /usr/bin/python2 -m virtualenv .venv.
  Does not work (error: /usr/bin/python2: No module named virtualenv)
• Use steps from https://help.dreamhost.com/hc/en-us/articles/215489338-Installing-and-using-virtualenv-with-Python-2 instead:
• Install a custom version of Python 2 as shown here https://help.dreamhost.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000218612-Installing-a-custom-version-of-Python-2
• in folder27 invoke: virtualenv -p /home/vscode/opt/python-2.7.15/bin/python venv
• open the folder in vscode. open a python file
• status bar shows that python-2.7.15 is used ✔️
• but no notification shows up
• reload, still no notification

I also don't get the notification later in the Python 3 steps.

Do I need a specific version of the Python extension?
