Some items, like snowshoes, are typically rented in pairs, even though the separate snowshoes are considered as different items. This is different from boots, for example, which actually come in pairs. It sometimes happens that people don't realise this and check out only one snowshoe, while taking two. This might also apply to other items (poles, some skiing items, et cetera). My suggestion is that the gear website gives some form of a warning to the desk worker (e.g. a red box) when they are about to rent out an odd number of such items. In this way, it is not strictly forbidden to rent out one snowshoe, but probably it will prevent some mistakes from happening.
