What is the problem you are trying to solve?

Save Page Offline
Issue :- #219

Save Page as PDF
Issue :- #3709

Why is it a problem?

A user might want to access some important websites even when he/she doesn't have a network connection.
Saving as PDF is an important feature as it provides the user to save a local copy of a website on his/her device which allows formatting and portability as well.

How would you solve the problem? What is your design proposal?

Firstly, I performed a Competitive Analysis.

Competitive Analysis:-

  1. Google Chrome provides with a download icon under the kebab menu which makes a local copy of the webpage the user is currently using and hence saves it offline.

1

  1. Opera provides with an Airplane icon saying "Offline Pages" under the section of "Add to" in the kebab menu to Save pages offline. And to save web pages as PDF, there is a separate option saying "Save as PDF" in the kebab menu.

2

Also it is worth mentioning that Opera provides customizable options when user wishes to save the web page as a PDF.
3

  1. Edge provides a similar download icon like Chrome does and works in a similar manner like Chrome does but reaching the download icon isn't as easy as the above two browsers as you have to scroll in the kebab menu to find it.

5

After doing the competitive analysis, in order to incorporate both Saving page as Offline and Save as PDF I decided to make a Superset of both saying "Save page" inside the kebab menu. And when the user clicks it, it provides with two options either to save the page as a pdf or to add it to offline pages.

7

Also incorporating the customizable features in saving as PDF option like Opera did.

8

I feel that any web page that is saved as PDF goes into the Downloads list (link to what I proposed earlier of how the Downloads Manager would look like here) but can be saved to any user defined location just as in Opera, whereas adding it to offline pages adds it into a folder named "Offline pages" in the "Library".

9

How would you measure your designs effectiveness?

Unmoderated User Testing:- Giving the users certain tasks (Making them save a web page, customizing it and finally saving it as a PDF).
