Name the three biggest issues

  1. The sign-up/sign-in feature is not easily found
  2. Unnecessary display of URLs on collection cards.
  3. Very long card lists for open tabs and collections.

Explain why it’s an issue

1. The sign-up/sign-in feature is not easily found
The home screen prompts a user to sign in but becomes unavailable after the user starts browsing.
Asides this a user can only sign in or sign up by going to settings.
Furthermore, the call to action on the settings screen is "Turn on Sync" which doesn't prompt a user to sign in or sign up.

2. Unnecessary display of URLs on collection cards.
The URLs on the body of a collection card is not very useful to a user. A user wouldn't want to remember URLs because the idea of creating a collection is for future reference. When there is more than one resource in a collection, the collection card no longer looks visually appealing.

3. Very long card lists for open tabs and collections.
If a user opens 20 tabs or creates 20 collections over time, all these tabs and collections are displayed all at once on the home screen. This can be overwhelming for users.

Show us how you would improve it

  1. A sign-up/sign-in icon or link should replace the incognito icon on the top right-hand corner of the screen. It will be clear to users that this feature is possible and very important for them.

  2. A brief description of the collection card should replace the visible URLs. This will be more useful to the user. The open tabs depict this concept as seen on the image below
open tabs - Firefox Preview app

  3. A maximum of five open tabs or collections should be displayed on the screen and a "see all" link placed after the fifth tab or collection. This will make the home screen less crowded.

How would you measure the effectiveness of your designs?

A. I will set a number of metrics e.g.
i. The number of users who sign in/sign up successfully
ii. The number of users who think the URLs are useful

B. Make a group of 20 people use the Firefox Preview app and record their feedback based on the metrics above.

C. Present issues I found on the app and my recommendations in terms of design to each user.

D. Make users compare the experience with my design suggestions with that on the Firefox Preview app and record.

E. Evaluate the results and approve or discard my designs.

I'm curious, where you would put the incognito icon?

When a user clicks on the + icon to create a new tab, I will prompt them to select between an incognito tab or a normal tab. So I will place the incognito icon here with some text say - "New Incognito tab/window" to the right of the icon.
I think the sign-in/sign-up feature is of higher precedence to the incognito feature. Thanks
