It currently is triggered by the MSYSTEM env var. It might make sense to rename it to PYTHONALTSEP or something, to be in line with

We could enable this by default in the MSYS2 env

Potential problems:

  • things unsetting MSYSTEM to disable the alternative behaviour will break
