At the same time, this is advanced stuff the website should work completely without in dev environments, maybe this shouldn't be our concern? (Docs on this +1 though)

Yes, in general, 90% of contributors will not care. But then occasionally somebody will want to understand how it all works if some complicated situation comes up. I don't think we need to say too much on the topic overall.

@snostorm Should we simply add @rvagg's comment in the new.nodejs.org README to close this issue?

Deployment

Full set up is in https://github.com/nodejs/build/tree/master/setup/www minus secrets and certificates. The webhook is setup on GitHub for this project and talks to a small Node server on the host which does the work. See the github-webhook package for this.
