Multiple users highlighted that it would be interesting to see projects by other organisations that have utilised a particular dataset and if it would be possible to showcase these and link to them.

Many of the open data portals we already link to in the summary text, but these were not easy to spot. We could add an area that has a more visual view of community projects, that also include:

  • Red flags dashboards that are based on OCDS datasets available in the Registry
  • Links to OCP blog posts related to specific datasets e.g. add a link to the Going 100% green in Lithuania blog post on the page for Lithuania data page in the Registry
  • Links to external investigations or blogs that utilise the OCDS dataset

The UI design here shows how this could look visually though the use of cards similar to the blog page on the OCP website.

Users should also be encouraged to send us links for us to showcase via the UI. The visual design includes a request to email data@open-contracing.org

I think that we should also link to alternative tools here. For instance the Aleph tool by OCCRP is much better suited to searching for and investigating specific suppliers and so we should direct users there.

Adding UI design directly.

Aleph is not specific to a publication. I'm not sure it makes sense to put it on every page. Where can we put it? In a similar manner on the homepage?

Not related to issue title, but the UI also changes the position of available formats. While it works better that way on desktop, on mobile I think it makes more sense to put it below the description and above the Access button.

For that block to appear in different locations on different screen sizes, we could put the markup on the page twice and display/hide it based on viewport in CSS.

Description is also below the flag on desktop.

Other changes I might not otherwise notice:

  • Top of page has a semi-circle watermark
  • Access -> Access data
  • "x" is hollow while "check" is filled in for greater visual distinction
  • Last retrieved includes the day
  • External links have a superscript icon
  • Prompt to contact us about quality (removed blue prompt)
  • Access data is in left gutter instead of inside block
  • Checkmarks next to formats in block (would need X mark if missing)

Also:

  • "Summary" moved into "Data quality summary". However, there is a reason for its current position. There is logic to add a bullet list of issues below the summary. We haven't used it yet, but it was in the older design, I think.
  • Another set of buttons to access data. I prefer a plain link. (1) Just have to click once instead of twice. (2) Can see what years are available (and later file sizes Show file sizes as part of the download section #253) in all formats, at once.

I was mulling over where to put Aleph yesterday. I agree somewhere on the homepage would make better sense.

Let me play with a mockup? There's also Cachadatos which CLIP has developed...

"Another set of buttons to access data. I prefer a plain link" I do think buttons are better, but not going to lose any sleep over this

Ok @jpmckinney here is what I'm thinking for the homepage.

I had to tweak the text in the boxes for "Learn about the source" and "Get directed". If you're happy, please can we update that as well?

I don't mean the choice of widget (button, link, dropdown, etc.). I mean requiring users to click a button to access the list of downloads, instead of just listing the downloads like we do now.

For the home page, please open a new issue for the text in the boxes, as it's not related to links to other projects.

For alternative data platforms, I'm not sure why "OCCRP Aleph" is repeated. The first occurrence in each card is larger than our h1 "OCP Data Registry".

I've created a new ticket to update the text in the boxes here #269

For alternative data platforms, the OCCRP is only repeated to show what two platforms would look like on the UI in terms of placement.

The text that looks larger the H1 is only an image (a screenshot from https://aleph.occrp.org/) and not a header. Aleph doesn't have anything in terms of images for me to use, so we will have to request something.

I mean the repetition between the image and box text. We'll have to find an image that doesn't contain the same text. We can just use their background, which they render at 0.09 opacity (full opacity attached).

Noting that to avoid having to explain to a user why we won't add their project, we could highlight a few "top" stories/tools and then collapse the rest.

The goals of this section are to:

  • Drive traffic to effective projects
  • Inspire use by highlighting relevant projects

So, I think a few good examples are better than a large number.
