VSCode Extension - Contribute Codex as Chat Provider for LM API?

Hello OpenAI,

I’m wondering if there are any plans for the OpenAI Codex VS Code extension to integrate with the official VS Code Language Model API as a registered chat provider. This could enable tighter integration with native LLM workflows in the editor, making interactions more seamless for developers.

From a developer’s perspective, this would allow us to leverage Codex directly within VS Code’s built-in language model features without relying on separate UI components. From OpenAI’s side, this could help increase adoption, highlight Codex’s capabilities in a competitive space, and gather valuable feedback from real-world usage to inform future improvements.

Is this being considered, or could it be added to the roadmap?
