this will be exacerbated by doing blocking tasks (e.g. snapshotting) in the io threads.

Same on my side. Let me know if I can supply any additional info - basically I get zombies around every 2nd shutdown.

Having the issue as well but only during Syncing. Once parity is synced (you see Imported.... messages in the logs), it no longer happens.
