My suggestion would be to split Readme.md up into two Parts:

Readme.md => all repo relevant parts e.g. Contributing, building, issue stuff, ...
USAGE.md => All documentation, which then could be copied over to the openHAB Docs Page on a later point (cc @ThomDietrich here)

The docs page is our main source of information,
so it would be nice to integrate the useful informations from here into it.
