The Target Blank Debate

We decided not to do target _blank for external links based on following ux reason:

• freedom to choose & stick to the default, _blank links are forced into a new window, the user can no longer open the link in the same window
• we don't have to make it hard to leave our site, if somebody wants to move on and read another website that is fine, imagine Google would to _blank on all external links
• reading position is not important enough to do _blank and is saved for members anyhow

The are place where we use it:

• underneath the comment composer, markdown & Etikette, the user is writing a comment and should not loose that state
• purchase form, tos, privacy and statue links, purchase form could be lost

From a ux perspective I'm pretty confident that it is the right choice. However I want to keep an open mind and collect feedback here.

  Externe Links: Es ist super, dass Ihr viele hilfreiche Links in Euren Artikeln habt! Allerdings öffnen die nicht in einem neuen Tab (ohne Ctrl), womit die ursprüngliche Seite verschwindet... Also bitte: "html target: new" (oder so ähnlich, habe jetzt nicht nachgeschaut)
  Anti (7/1):
  Seiten automatisch in einem neuen Tab/Fenster zu öffnen ist problematisch. Eine Begründung der führenden User Experience Agentur gibt es hier (Punkt 9): https://www.nngroup.com/articles/top-10-mistakes-web-design/

Gute Reportagen und Newsletter bei der
@RepublikMagazin - herzlichen Dank! Aber: Könnt ihr bitte gewisse "Standards" einhalten / umsetzen, dass z.B. bei Newslettern die Links in einem neuen Fenster aufgehen? Finde es sehr mühsam, dass es im gleichen Fenster aufgeht. Merci!
