Description of issue

I am trying to install some new softwares to my home directory with homebrew on a CentOS 7 server where I do not have root acess. The gcc installed on the server was quite old so I tried to install a new one, but the installation fails every time with the package xz, like:

As the brew doctor output states, you are not using the default prefix. This prevents you from using the binaries we build, and thus requires you to build everything from source when installing.

As you are running an unsupported configuration, there is not much we can do. This doesn't appear to be Homebrew related due to configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables. It doesn't even get to the point of installing gcc.

xz probably should be relocatable if it's a GCC dependency - we can have a look at that.

Here is what I have found. installing glibc with homebrew works fine, however installing xz with homebrew fails. Is it due to the gcc version during compilation? I tried to set CC and CXX to the newer version of gcc installed by conda to avoid this problem, but it did not seem to work.

I've made xz relocatable now so you should now no longer need to compile xz and can instead use the prebuilt bottle.
