Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. This is the infamous Lorem Ipsum text that is commonly used as a placeholder in web design, but what does it actually mean? It is actually very hard to find a definitive translation, as the text is intentionally incoherent and doesn't make sense. However, let's try and break the first sentence down:
Lorem sounds like a third declension noun becuase of the accusative "-em" ending, but lorem is not actually a word in Latin! It is merely a placeholder or a random word placed there, making the final translation process very hard.
Ipsum has the defintion of 'very' or 'itself". For example, the sentence "villa ipsum magna est!" can translate to 'The village is very big" or "The village itself is big!".
Dolor is a third declension noun that declines that "clamor, clamoris, noise". Dolor translates to pain or sorrow in English.
Sit is actually the third person conjugation of sum in the present tense! It is in the subjunctive mood, which shows uncertainty, so sit would translate to "it may be". sum, esse, fui, futurus in the present subjunctive is as follows:
Amet as you may guess, is also in the subjunctive mood - it is actually amare in the third person present!
So as a loose translation we can guess Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet translates to:
Let there be pain itself, love
However, it is important to note that this is merely a guess and this sentence is no grammatically correct. In fact it should be:
"Sit ipsum dolor, amet"
The nonsensical word lorem is omitted, so we have ourselves a grammatically fair sentence.
I hope you enjoyed learning how lorem ipsum was written!
