I might be reviving an old topic here, but I have the same problem and VS code wont allow me to fix it?

in my VS Code Github Code spaces is at v1.16.11 theres no update button which means vs code thinks that this is the latest version, but if i check the vscode market place i can see that multiple versions of the extension has been released, but vscode is not picking it up for some reason?

At the time of writing the latest release is v1.17.3, BUT it gets wierder.

If i uninstall my existing Github Codespaces exstension, the market place ui inside vscode now displays the 1.17.3 as the latest version.
If i then try to install this version, vscode installs but then immediately updates thev version number to v1.16.11 again.???

I have tried this multiple times, both using the market place ui and the link from the webpage, and nothing seems to help?

I have also checked the downloadable versions from the market place webpage and opened up the archive contents

Both the 'vsixmanifest' manifests and the package.json report the correct version.

Edit: never mind seems my vscode is wildly out of date, guess i got used to everything being auto updating.

leaving this to help anyone else encountering the same issue.
