This was originally reported in https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/15823, but that was coopted by end users who ran into this due to the https://www.githubstatus.com/incidents/52z0j6phhnjs outage

It was then reported as https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/51154, but for https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/70478 a distinction was made between Question and Product Feedback. It is now being refiled as Product Feedback.

If GitHub needs to refile it again, I'd appreciate it if a GitHub employee were to do this.

Story

I'm debugging a number of flows involving GitHub.

Actual Results

remote: fatal error in commit_refs

Expected results

A human readable error message explaining what's wrong. It should indicate which category of thing is unhappy

• is there branch protection active? (for this repository, there is no branch protection)
• I have no idea

What happened

Here's the end result:
check-spelling-sandbox/PowerToys#6 (comment)

In this case, the workflow did not have its own SSH deploy-key, so it was using the GITHUB_TOKEN auto key.

You can see that it does have some key, because if it didn't have any key, it'd show something like this:

It works fine with a deploy key
