Organizing GitHub Repositories with Custom Folders or Tags

Current Problem:

GitHub users managing multiple projects across different technology areas don’t have an efficient way to organize their repositories. This can make profiles difficult to navigate, both for developers and for recruiters or collaborators looking for specific projects.

Proposal:

I propose adding two ways to organize repositories on GitHub:

1. Custom Folders: Users could create folders where they group repositories by work areas, technologies, or personalized categories.
2. Repository Tags: Users could tag repositories with custom keywords and then allow repositories to be filtered by those tags from their profile.

Benefits:

• Better organization of personal projects.
• Easier navigation of GitHub profiles for both developers and recruiters/collaborators.
• A clearer presentation of users’ skills and areas of expertise.
• It could be useful for both individual users and organizations.

Examples:

• A developer could organize Data Science projects into a folder or tag their repositories with Machine Learning, NLP, etc.
• A recruiter could visit a candidate’s profile and filter projects by tags like Front-End or DevOps.

Implementation:

• Create a new option for users to create custom folders in their profiles.
• Allow users to add tags to repositories and filter repositories in the profile by those tags.

agreed, i have the same problem right now with ~30 repos in a personal account, being able to create folders would make my life much easier and my repos much cleaner
