How do you switch to the old search? The new is completely useless and whenever I search for something it always comes up as Your search did not match any code yet with the old search I was able to find what I wanted so easily.

And what's worse is you can't even switch back to the old search?!?!

Sorry about that @SynergentDev. If you search with repo:your/repo, it will index your repository within about 5 minutes. If this doesn't work, please let us know so we can investigate.

@SynergentDev I think that your repository was not indexed due to a bug in our system handling repositories that were deleted and re-created. I have reindexed all your repositories and they should be searchable soon.

The search seems to be working again - this is a test repo and will likely be removed and re-created again, is there any way for us to force the indexing?

It's supposed to be indexed when you search within it the first time, but due to the bug that didn't happen. We are fixing that bug and it should be rolled out soon. We are also working on improving indexing for newly created repositories.

The only way to switch back to the old search is to use it while not logged in on GitHub. (Or use private window)

How to search 'png','zip' files？

@DouYinApi only text files are indexed (see limitations) so png or zip files cannot be found. Within a repository, you can use the file finder (type t to open it) to search paths.

Indexing the paths for all files is something we're looking at for a coming release.

the biggest problem with the new search is that it doesn't support drag and drop
I always used it on any page, I just selected a word and dragged it into the search field, and now I need to save it to the buffer and click on the search field, and first delete unnecessary lines by default there, this is very inconvenient
just give people a choice like with other pre-features
who wants a new search will use the new search, and you will develop it, and those who want to use the old search, let them use the old one, especially since the old search is there if the user is not logged in, so why not give people a choice?

The limitation of 100 code samples search results - is the worse thing for me. There is no possibility to see more pages than '5'. Please get back old git!

I was honestly Shocked and confused to see that github changed its search engine. at first, I thought it was just a UI improvement but things I could easily find on Github now seems impossible. feels like I lost a superpower

And the worst part is that they was nothing wrong with the old search engine and moreover this feels like a step back

I use the search bar almost exclusively to switch between repos in my organization, and now that clicking search auto-fills the repo I'm currently in I need to perform extra actions to switch repos compared to old search.

Sorry this change broke your workflow. After activating the search bar you should see recently viewed repositories. You can click on these to go straight there.

This is getting crap now. I used to find apis posted by other people using "graphql.facebook.com" but now I do not see any result. Why?
I can not sort code based on the index date.
I can not do literally anything.
Bring back the old search because this new search is totally a joke.

This doesn't work very well. I'm looking for a different term but google is showing no results. If I search in this new search it shows 1 result from 2 months ago but nothing more recent. I used to get a few pages of results.

The new search is pure awful.

We have the same issue. I like the new search, but without everything being indexed, it's just useless to me now.
Got to search within the repo to force an indexation.
But that would mean i'd have to do so over 300 times as I need to search within all repos of our organization.
Is there an option to reindex all our repos? @look , is this something you can do? If so, what do you need?

I believe they are reindexing the entire site because the search has been getting better each week. We’ll probably just need to wait until they finish.

I have not figured out how to sort based off index date in the new search, but that probably wouldn’t be as useful if they are reindexing everything.

When I search in one of our private repos it's like a 50/50% change of it being indexed. This is really inconvenient when I'm on the phone with a coworker and need to search for something, and I can't because I randomly get "This repository's code is being indexed right now".

I suspect they employ some kind of heuristic for which repos get indexing priority and which don't, to save on servers or energy cost or something. It's also kinda reminiscent of the 'magic' recommendation algorithm of YouTube.

Why not just force a regular old file search when the index is not available (scanning only plain text files which are not too big) ?

It's amazing that code search still often doesn't work at all. Then sometimes a few hours later it does work again, for the same repo. Can you maybe add warning in the UI that search is not reliable? (Or when a repo is not indexed?) Because people might search for vulnerabilities too and led into believing that it's not present in a project. Even external sites like https://grep.app/ have managed to provide a much better experience many years ago.

Totally agree. It has been 5 months since this topic was started, and I can still barely search the code in my own repos, unless I manually trigger an index for a particular repo. It is completely ridiculous that it's been this long and search is still not working, when it was working fine under the old search!

For example, i'm trying to find the most recent code that deals with Twitter constantly changing API. And I don't have the option to sort by most recently updated code! So I get the old examples that don't work anymore! So I'm searching for code in google like in old pre-github days. Terrible, it's just inhumane what Github did to the search😔

Very disappointed in using Github, As a open source contributing platform Github should not restrict user capability to search.
