Unable to commit in newly created codespace

I can't create a commit due to some signing key error:

$ git commit
error: Load key "/tmp/.git_signing_key_tmpV3InPC": invalid format?

fatal: failed to write commit object

I have the GPG verification setting enabled at https://github.com/settings/codespaces, but I've been able to use this before. This is in a new codespace with the default image/environment (there's no .devcontainer config), and I've tried removing and recreating the codespace to no avail.

Relatedly: will there be any support for SSH-based git commit signing? Local development containers in VS Code support this, including forwarding requests to the host machine's SSH agent. This would be the ideal setup, since this isn't the first time Codespaces has had issues with commit signing.

Hmm, looks like git doesn't handle an unavailable SSH key particularly well when SSH-based commit signing is enabled… a more helpful error message would be nice but that's of course not controlled by Codespaces.
