Codespace "running participants" is extremely slow to create or delete files

My codespace takes well over a half minute to create or delete files. VSCode-in-browser shows me the the "Running 'File Create' Participants ...." popunder and that spins. This is to create empty files, it's not transferring or writing lots of data. The same goes for deleting an empty file. This is also not a latency issue. - the codespace is snappy for file saves after creation, it's just the create/delete that crawls. Also, if I click "Cancel" on the popunder, the process exits successfully, so it looks like an additional process somewhere is lagging.
