Suggestion created in Oskari Developer Summit 2018: wizards for helping the user to choose suitable tools.
Problem: Oskari has lot's of tools and the UI can become crowded if all the possible tools are in use. New approach could be to create paths for users which guide the user into more in-depth possibilities of Oskari.
Example:
step is plain map view with simple action buttons for basic navigation and layer handling. Let's call this "the starting view".
buttons for "actions" like thematic maps, analysis, publish, download etc - could be behind one "Advanced tools" button.
Example of an Advanced tool:
Click Advanced tools button and you get a list of possible advanced tools (download, analysis, thematic maps, own datasets, published maps etc)
Choose e.g. Thematic maps (or "Create thematic map") and a wizard pops up guiding your activities:
2.2. Choose a theme for your thematic map (possible layers appear only after you have chosen the theme and this means the admin has to choose suitable themes for the statistical data)
2.3. Choose available dataset or go back to choosing the theme
2.4. Choose a variable (suitable field for your analysis)
2.4. Choose a suitable regional borders for your thematic analysis & preview the result
2.5. Choose a timeline (not compulsory)
2.6. Ready to publish? Go a head.
2.7. Result is seen in the map view
2.8. If need to go back and redo the work either a) go back to action number 1. or click to the wizard through layer list or additional button that has appeared on the view.
It this is something we want to go forward with, we need a project for developing the UI.
