Change App-Logo/Icon

I'm not a graphicer or a designer, but in my opinion the current app logo does absolutely not fit to owncloud.
it should be more flat, in a blue/grey color.

The current logo is too general, it should be more specific.

this is just a mockup but i think is much more to owncloud related than the current icon:

maybe someone is more related to gimp and can it do better? maybe with a cloud or so? O:-)

Sorry for the late reply. This is a great idea. I'm not a designer, too. So probably someone else could re-design the app icon?

@stefan-niedermann sure use the grey is a good way and keeps the graphical identity. An other option could be to start from the owncloud app icon :

The user must be able to differ between the files and the news app, imho there is not enough difference between these icons

The app icons needs to be 512*512px (For Google Play). Then they're downscaled with the following tool (web-based) http://android-ui-utils.googlecode.com/hg/asset-studio/dist/icons-launcher.html.

Furthermore I think the icon should contain the typical rss "icon". (The three circular strips).

The Problem is, I dont like the blue color of the ownCloud Logo. It's kind of outdated. Compared to the other Top 20 News Apps on Google Play I think the icons needs a modern style.

Probably we could pick the colors from the ownCloud website.

IMHO all is better than the current yellow logo, so lets change it now and think/discuss after switching to a owncloud-related color-scheme?

I created three Logos (SVG, resolution is no problem longer). The first is my first suggestion (the light grey linear gradient). The second and third are the suggested colors from @David-Development (#1d2d44 and #2b4a69).
The here uploaded resolutions are 1024x1024. I can mail the svg-versions if you want.

I've inserted the new icon but I'm not really happy with the layout. I think there needs to be more space at the borders because it looks like the white stripes go trough the border. I've attached an image with all three icons in action.

@jancborchardt What do you think? More space between the circle and the white stripes?

@David-Development i aggree - at this small size it looks ugly.

We should decide a color first, so i don't have to make every change three times.

I think the first (light, grey) icon i suggestet at topic begin is not as good as i thought.
Choose one of the blue icons and i'll modify it.

I think the round design better (Personal opinion). The square design is like an iOS App-Icons. Furthermore I prefer the typical RSS icon design (The dot with two stripes). But it's an Open-Source App so I'm glad to get suggestions! But you're right jan, with the ownCloud News Icon there is a better association with the app.

Lots of Android apps have rounded corners as well. Maybe we can make the radius a bit less, that’s more common on Android. But yeah, what do the others think?

@David-Development i slept a night over all and came to following points:

Furthermore I prefer the typical RSS icon design

1. This app is not a RSS-Client. It can not work only local without a owncloud instance.
2. This app is a client for owncloud news. So the app does not necessairy need a RSS-Icon (point, two circ. stripes).
3. Best association would be given with the news-logo. (Now we could discuss if the news-app should change the logo to RSS...)
4. Background: We should use a color, which appears in owncloud itself, like @jancborchardt said. So i think we can decide between the dark grey from the app-bar, the dark blue from the header and we could make it transparent (only the three white stripes maybe).

The square design is like an iOS App-Icons.

1. no it isn't. apple does not obtain rounded corners ;P Especially if we choose news-logo instead of rss-logo, the icon should be a square. when i started this issue, i just wanted a quick change, so i did only change the background color to something that fits better.

Why a gradient? Nowhere in owncloud appears a gradient? If in owncloud all is flat, why do a break in the apps?

@stefan-niedermann ownCloud does have a gradient on the log in page. ;) I played around with making a flat icon but it just doesn’t look good. I would still say the icon I posted above fits best. (Althought it’s different colors, I also used the same style with noise and gradient on the ownCloud app logo.)

And 2 things about the icon: Please remove the black and light shadows on the top and bottom, we’re phasing those out from the app icon. Also, the rounded corners don’t seem smooth where they connect to the lines (especially visible on the bottom.

I can see no problem? Maybe it's because your Browser renders this 2048px-image smaller? have you tried to open the image itself in a new tab and zoom in?
