A roadmap for future plans might be good to avoid duplicated effort and highlight areas where contributions are desired.

@JobJob Good suggestion! Currently we have the NEWS file which contains a TODO section. Might be good to separate that TODO out as a roadmap file. Or might be better to create an issue here so that people could discuss what is more important.

Yep, either sounds good, or maybe a wiki page, or a section in the docs...
