Issue/Bug Description

I have two external monitors connected via daisy chain to a single display port. I want the daisy chained monitor to be my primary display and the directly connected one to be a secondary display. After booting, I can configure my displays as such and it works flawlessly until the machine is rebooted. Upon rebooting, the directly connected display is set as the primary and the other display is repositioned directly to the right of the new primary display.

Steps to reproduce (if you know)

  1. Connect two monitors via daisy chain.
  2. Set monitor configuration with the daisy chaned one as primary.
  3. Reboot.

Expected behavior

A display configuration will persist between reboots, and preferably even between the external monitors being disconnected and reconnected.

I experience similar behavior when disconnecting an external monitor. When the monitor is connected I can set the arrangement and it works as expected (I haven't tested it through a reboot). However if I unplug the external monitor when I reconnect it I need to reset the arrangement.

I use the built in monitor as a primary and the external as a secondary in a somewhat unusual arrangement with the secondary directly above the primary. I would expect this arrangement to persist through disconnections as that's what laptops were made for. If I had a more standard side by side arrangement I probably wouldn't event notice this as that is what it defaults to upon reconnecting.

Arrangement:

I have experienced similar behavior with 17.10, 18.04, and it continues with 18.10. I connect to projectors in various rooms that have different inputs and have noticed that the layout changes depending on which video port I use.

My laptop (a galago pro) has a mini-dvi and an hdmi port. If I use the mini-dvi port (for a vga dongle), then the display arrangement is as @kylie-a's image illustrates. If I use the hdmi port, then the display arrangement is as attached.

I've wondered if it was related to HiDPI scaling, since my Galago Pro has the HiDPI screen and my external monitors are always "LoDPI"...
