Since netcdf 1.4 we have a netCDF4.Dataset.filepath() :
http://unidata.github.io/netcdf4-python/#netCDF4.Dataset.filepath

We can use that to avoid the problem quoted here :

ncobj/lib/ncobj/nc_dataset.py

.. note::

  • i.e. we can now support creation form a filepath (and re-opening as required to re-access variables).
