today is highlighted by css, so it shouldn't be so hard to implement an option to select "now/today" button which sets the date to the current date

What is the motivation / use case for changing the behavior?
If you have bigger timeranges and want to use the datepicker so you have to manually change the year and the date etc.
e.g. if 2012/1/1 is selected, but you want to select today you have to click through all years or change the datepicker manually. Would be nice comfort feature to set the current day/time with one click.Maybe between Month and calendar or at the bottom above timepicker
