Would be nice if it came with a configuration profile that set it up for the printer, just like the fff file for Simplify3D.

There is indeed such a thing in slic3r, it is called "configuration".
http://manual.slic3r.org/configuration-organization/configuration-organization

Does it not work for you? Would you be please more explicit about your request?
