Right now branding has text on DEIA that doesn't quite fit. i'm adding it here as an issue so we can find the best spot for this in another PR.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility

pyOpenSci builds diverse community that supports free and open Python tools for processing scientific data. pyOpenSci accomplishes this through a combination of community building, mentorship, peer review of software and education and outreach. We are building the pyOpenSci community in a way that promotes fairness and justice for all, with a particular focus on supporting those from traditionally marginalized / underrepresented groups. We want every member of our community to thrive; we want to make a positive impact on our community members’ work and on the work of others. You can learn more about how this is put into action by reading through our Code of Conduct.

DEIA in Peer Review

pyOpenSci recruits and supports editors and reviewers from different backgrounds and gender-identities in each review that we perform.

To break this down into concrete actions:

  • We actively recruit individuals from underrepresented backgrounds
  • We support people through individualized mentorship
  • When possible, we elevate people into leadership roles

pyOpenSci also incorporates DEIA throughout its content branding. This includes the use of alt tags in all figures, both on the pyOpenSci website as well as social media platforms and any other places pyOpenSci may share or produce content. We also have checks for the presence of alt tags as part of the CI checks run on many of our GitHub repositories.

In addition, our web design is responsive, built with WCAG guidelines in mind, and uses fonts and color designs that are accessible to both screen-readers and low-vision individuals.

If you have any questions about pyOpenSci's DEIA efforts, please email us at: .
