This notion came out of #565, where I needed an icon file to test against. I knocked something simple up and checked it in to my fork of Pillow; I also turned on Github pages for my fork and had a quick bash at using the logo on there. Comments welcome (remembering that it’s up to @wiredfool and @aclark4life to make any final decisions).

Beautiful! Let me get back to you with further comments, but my initial reaction is "this is awesome" 😄. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

@al45tair If you can submit a .xcf (assuming Gimp) in a pull request I will merge. I'd like to hack on it and experiment with different artwork inside the snake, as well as a version without text.

The original artwork is in an Illustrator file (and the white borders vary in thickness for different icon sizes, so there are multiple versions). What I’d really like, because it’d be cool, is to add support for saving .icns files and then do a Python script (maybe using aggdraw?) that can generate a Pillow icon given any two image files. I also don't see any reason why I couldn't extract the vectors for the text into a form that Pillow could render.

So, remembering that lightening python had a trademark issue with the PSF and their logo --

from https://www.python.org/psf/trademarks/

Use of derived logos for freely distributed 3rd-party modules or tools -- Allowed if for the Python programming language. Use of derived logos for commercial modules and tools requires permission from the PSF.

We recommend contacting the PSF for permission for all derived logos to avoid placing a confusing logo into wide-spread use. Contacting us is not a requirement for the specific non-commercial uses listed above, or when using freely distributable derived logos that have already been approved by the PSF. However, obtaining permission from the PSF is required in all other uses of a derived logo.

I think this is covered by both of these two clauses -- Probably ok but it might be a good idea to check first.

I'll take the Illustrator file if it's not too much trouble, I've got a copy of Illustrator now and can try hacking on it. Thanks again for working on this!

In the meantime, I've added it here! http://python-pillow.github.io/ 👍

I’ve posted the .ai file on Dropbox

Thank you! Although it tells me:

Not sure if that's important

Ah, the images are linked rather than embedded. I’ll get Illustrator to embed them instead; that will make the file rather large, so it’ll take a while to upload. I’ll let you know when it’s there.

FYI I'm going to officially assume that the Pillow logo qualifies as

Use of derived logos for freely distributed 3rd-party modules or tools
-- Allowed if for the Python programming language

(excerpted from https://www.python.org/psf/trademarks/)

If someone knows otherwise, please let us know. I'm also emailing the PSF as I write this comment, and will provide an update when I get their response.
