Há 5 bilhões de anos atrás, quando o nosso sistema solar se formou, sobrou um
"resto" de coisa. Em uma situação hipotética, estamos construindo uma casa,
colocamos cimento, areia, água e finalizamos a construção, após isso sobra
várias coisas do lado, os cometas são essas coisas que sobraram.
Voltando a realidade, temos o Sol e, tudo que está sob a influência
gravitacional do Sol está orbitando, então tem cometas que passam a
cada 10 anos, 5 mil anos e, tem o Halley que passa a cada 76 anos.

A onomástica dos cometas se dá pelo cientista que descobriu a periodicidade
dele, que neste caso foi o Edmond Halley, o nome oficial deste cometa é
1P/Halley, o P é de periódico, ou seja, foi o primeiro cometa que teve
sua periodicidade calculada.
Mudando de assunto, tem a onomástica dos furacões também, que seguem o
alfabeto. É sempre seguindo a ordem alfabética. A cada ano é resetada
a ordem.
