There are quite a few organizations and individuals running internet-wide scans these days. Some of these share their bulk data publicly, while others offer a mix of free and commercial services.

Ongoing Projects

Public Datasets

  • DNS Census 2013. This project compiled a list of over 750 million host names using a variety of sources.
  • Critical.IO. The Critical.IO scanning project ran from May of 2012 to April of 2013. The data is broken up by month and protocol and covers a mix of TCP and UDP services.
  • Internet Census 2012. This static dataset was collected illegally through the Carna botnet built for this purpose. An interesting reference point and a great source of statistics all the same.

Public Services

  • SHODAN. Shodan provides a mix of free and commercial services and covers a huge amount of protocols. The public search engine and visualization tools are pretty useful as well.
  • Project Un1c0rn. This project scans the internet looking for exposed databases and development services.
  • Telnet is Bad. This project scans the internet for open telnet services and provides a live banner grab (via Fetch).
