The module for the realtek 8192cu/8188cus dongle would not load at all.

Don't know if it's any good to you, but I had the same issue (exec error for me), looking through the /lib/modules subdir I found two copies of the 8192cu.ko module, one under kernel/net/wireless and another under kernel/driver/net/wireless. I scrubbed both of them, and re-download the 8192cu.ko file from electrictea and re-installed:

modprobe -r 8192cu
install -m 644 ./8192cu.ko /lib/modules/3.1.9+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/
depmod -a
reboot

should come up ok after that....

It's working after manually recompiling the module against the latest kernel source.

I'm having this issue with the latest wheezy image (2012-08-16). Manually recompiling doesn't sound like a fix. My raspberry pi won't boot with this wifi adapter plugged in. Sounds like a bug to me.
