This took me a long time to track down, but I finally found why I was unable to compile net-im/ejabberd-18.09. It turns out that downgrading to dev-erlang/xmpp-1.2.5 did the trick. You may want to consider putting an upper bound on the dev-erlang/xmpp dependency.

I don't have the failing build.log any more but let me know if you have trouble reproducing this issue.
