Copying file metadata (particularly executable status) from artifacts

Hi,

I'm using hatch-build-scripts to build a binary to package with my wheels. Unfortunately when it copies the resulting binary it doesn't copy the permission bits, so it loses its executable status. Is there a way to get that behaviour?

Looking at the source, it seems like copyfile doesn't copy metadata, so a quick fix would be to switch to copy or copy2. Though I don't know much about this kind of thing in Python.

Another option would be to have a hook for a command that I can run after the artifact has been copied in.

Am I missing anything here?

It looks like a decent workaround for now is to add another build-scripts hook to the array, which will run after the previous one.

Something like this:

[[tool.hatch.build.targets.wheel.hooks.build-scripts.scripts]]
out_dir = "blah"
commands = ["build blah"]
artifacts = ["binary"]

# chmod the artifact from previous step (it erases the executable bit)
[[tool.hatch.build.targets.wheel.hooks.build-scripts.scripts]]
work_dir = "blah"
commands = ["chmod +x binary"]
artifacts = []
