This is a feature request to add an option to show trails for TF frames and frame axes.
This already exists for the links in the RobotModel (property Show Trail). It would be useful if the same functionality could be provided for arbitrary frames in the TF tree or the Axes widget.

I'm very sorry. I am the only remaining rviz(1) maintainer and thus cannot handle any feature requests. I barely manage to fix bugs reported. However, you are very welcome to contribute such a feature.
Sorry, I didn't mean to put pressure on you to implement such a feature. I also don't plan to contribute any more to the ROS1 ecosystem. I will keep this feature on my TODO list for when I eventually switch to ROS2.
