When running either catkin_prepare_release or catkin_package_version in a folder which does not contain any package.xmls then it fails:

∫ ~/groovy/ros_catkin_ws/src/catkin/bin/catkin_prepare_release
expected string or buffer

and

∫ ~/groovy/ros_catkin_ws/src/catkin/bin/catkin_package_version
