Use ROS message to trigger recording

Is it possible to trigger the creation of a bag file by sending a message on a specific topic? If not, is there any documentation how the client communicates with the server?

That option does not exist currently. You could either write something that calls the ROS service when the topic is published OR modify the code to add the topic based hook.
