I suspect there is a bug in the code that counts contributors in beta. I am collecting some information below to see if things substantially change tomorrow after the release. If so, I'll update this issue with the relevant data. If not, I will close this issue tomorrow.
Today, the day before 1.70.0 is tagged, the release page once again shows over 500 contributors, which I suspect is a consistent bug since the last several releases have all had contributors in the high 300's.
