Looking through the libraries available, this seems to be one of the better choices: https://github.com/fivdi/onoff

Just go with it for now unless something substantially more amazing comes around. This one has a synchronous and asynchronous API, supports multiple PI boards and the Beagle board, which means it could be extensible to other boards like the Tessle potentially, and it seems to be one of the better maintained libraries
