Notational Velocity is an application for Mac OS X that stores and retrieves notes.

The same area is used for both searching for existing notes and entering the descriptions of new ones. As one begins to add a note by typing its description, related notes appear below, letting users modify those if they choose. Likewise, if a search for some tidbit reveals nothing, one need simply press return to create a new note with the appropriate description.
