Hi @shama!

...Expanding a bit on #3...

I've been tasked with creating video/voice tutorials aimed at developers.

Have you found an optimal setup for screen recording and voiceover work? Any tips for someone who is about to go down this road?

Thanks in advance and thanks again for the excellent videos you've made so far! :)

Oh nice! Are they going to be public? I'd love to watch them!

My current setup is pretty minimal but I like it:

  • ScreenFlow
  • Retina display to record in 4K
  • Blue Snowball w/ DragonPad Pop Filter
  • Second monitor for reading script/notes

I have a list of tips I read to remind myself before recording:

  • Increase editor and terminal font size.
  • Pause often between subjects.
Easier to edit out dead air than "umms", especially when combining multiple takes.
  • Talk with hands.
I dont know why but I mess up less when using my hands.
  • Don't adjust windows.
I have a habit of resizing/moving windows often but it's hard to seamlessly chop the video if the clips have different window positions.

Each video generally gets created like this:

  1. Idea and high level notes on what to cover.
  2. Expand into rough start to finish script visualizing in my head how it will go.

I try to start basic in the beginning then ramp up the difficulty more towards the end.
  3. Cut out a ton. For me I've found ~50 lines is my target of ~10 minutes.
  4. Do a practice run and adjust script.

So important as things never seem to work when live coding and it really throws me off.
  5. Record and edit in one sitting.

If there are parts that need retake or additions, easier when you have everything setup in the same place during editing
  6. Publish and remind myself videos I think are going to suck, people really like and vice versa.
So I don't worry myself too much about publishing. :)
