extend_env(key, value, demarcator=':') perhaps?

Behavior would be: take whatever is currently stored for that value, append ':' + new value, or set it to value if there is nothing there yet.

Use cases: PATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH, PIP_FIND_LINKS, PYTHONPATH etc...
