Pictures and videos are currently downloaded automatically, and there is no indication of incoming picture or video until it has been downloaded completely.

At least in Android client, it is possible to have just an indication of downloadable picture or video instead of downloading it automatically. Similar functionality would be very welcome to Signal Desktop.
