Bug Description

Slow Startup not only a problem of speed -> loosing messages

Some issues talk about the problem of starting Signal Desktop because of loading lots of new messages (used on other devices in the offline time)
e.g. #1442

=> As I learned today this is not only a qusetion of usability and comfort,
there is also the cance of loosing Messages.

Steps to Reproduce

How could it happen:
During Weekend I only used Signal on my Phone and Laptop.
On Monday Morning when switchen on the workstation. there are some hundred messages to load.
As know this takes lots of time.
If during this time a new message comes in, it does never appear on the workstation (Signal Desktop, latest)

  • not with the messages from the past,
  • not with new messages coming after finishing loading the old messages.

But this message apears correctly at the signal app on the phone (signal android, latest)

Have you checked to see if messages are out of order rather than simply missing? We've had similar issues reported a few times: #3332 #3586

just looked by hand about 20messages back but didn't see it.
Could check this in more detail tomorrow.

Just to clarify: only the one message is missing in desktop app, which was send from a friend to me during desktop app was syncing/starting up.
This message was perfectly received in android app which was in normal (not startup/syncing) mode.

If you've found a missing message, the next step is to provide your Desktop instance debug log via View -> Debug Log then the 'sent id' for that message from Android (go to message details, then long press on the sent header - the 'sent id' will be copied to your clipboard).

I also noticed this issue. Here is the debug log for the day in question: https://debuglogs.org/874f3d53b3a19ec24c39c0e77e128ee526d8a147971b1e5100c0630b101f4815

and the lost message's sent id: 1569956757488

@patilpranay That message is in your log with no associated errors; are you completely sure that it's not sorted incorrectly?

Interesting, I searched for it and found the message. However, it's placed in between some messages from the previous day. As a result, when I was looking for it at the bottom of the message log of the current day, I didn't see it. Regardless, I think this is still a bug.

Ahh, I guess my issue is a duplicate of #3332
