[Feature Request] Change Chat Colors on Desktop #3979
Comments
At the moment, the design is that you phone is the single source of truth for contact data. So contact changes, including colors, only happen there. |
Ah, I didn't realise the color was tied to contact data. I thought it was purely cosmetic locally. Interesting decision to make something like a display parameter tied to the actual data, but at least I know how it works now! Is this documented? |
At one point there was some hashing used to determine initial color. Not sure what it is now. Either way, you can change a contact's color in your phone. But, like information from your address book, we still consider your phone to be the primary source of truth. |
Can you share how to change the color of the contact? I see no option in my phone. iOS app, just downloaded yesterday. All uses in my chat groups are showing same colors which is terrible experience. They all joined yesterday and everyone has varying degrees of colors. Some have shared screenshots where others have different chat bubble colors while mine is all the same color (blue and gray in dark mode). Why does everyone have such different experiences and how do I get the colors for users chat bubbles? This should be a default. |
@terencechow Desktop will use the iOS color scheme if linked with an iOS device. It will use the multicolor Android theme if linked with an Android device. |
@scottnonnenberg-signal So are you saying that ios devices do not have a different color scheme for each user in a chat group? Note that I don't see an option to change a contact's color in my phone... |
@terencechow Yes. Chat bubbles on iOS are either blue or gray, with no option to change conversation colors. |
Thank you for this clarification. (Also is there somewhere where this type of feature request is being tracked? I wouldn't mind taking a look and seeing if I can help add it, either to the iOS app or the desktop one) |
@terencechow That kind of sweeping visual change is best left to our designers. |

Are there any plans to be able to change the chat color on Desktop? Currently I can only do it on iOS/Android.
