Disappearing Pictures in Chat History Due to Storage Management #5935

Bug description:
Many pictures I sent and received in a specific Signal chat on iOS have disappeared from the chat history, showing the message “original message not found.” Not sure why it happens, but I assume these images have been removed as part of “storage management” due to low device storage. However, the person on the other end of the chat still has all the pictures in their Signal chat history.

Steps to reproduce:
• Use Signal on iOS with limited device storage.
• Send and receive media (pictures) in a chat.
• Observe that older pictures eventually disappear from the chat history.

Actual result:
Older pictures are no longer visible in the chat history on my device, replaced by “original message not found.”

Expected result:
The pictures should remain in the chat history or provide an option to restore them if they were removed due to storage management.

Screenshots:
None available as the issue involves missing images.

Device info:
Device: iPhone 15
iOS version: 18.2
Signal version: 7.41.3 (520)

Link to debug log:
No log available.

If this requires additional logs or details, I’m happy to provide them. Let me know if there’s a way to recover the pictures from the chat partner’s history.

The same happened to me today. I hope the pictures can be recovered.
