Sending a payload upon disconnection

How can I send additional data when disconnecting a socket on the server? socket.disconnect() doesn't allow sending a payload.

If I did this:

socket.emit('disconnect_reason', 'Reason here');
socket.disconnect();

Would the client get the event before it gets disconnected?
