To minimise users' cognitive workload, I propose automatic migration to new usernames (#1049) if no username is repeated more than once, and opt-in automatic migration depending on the instance configuration, (may not produce the best-looking names, though) if this is not the case.

why did you open a new issue? this should be part of #1049
